[texhax] Text in one and two column on same page

Thanks for the suggestion but since I am using \twocolumn before
\begin{document}
with the command
\begin{multicols}{3}
yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
\end{multicols}

I get
yy yy yy   xxxxxxx
yy yy yy   xxxxxxx
xxxxxxx   xxxxxxx
