Karl,

Recall that the Macintosh has always used curl rather than wget.

Searching for the error I reported earlier, I came across a web page
containing a comment dated December 2, 2015, with the assertion
“you will probably run into more issues like this as we don’t
officially support 10.6 any more unfortunately.” 

I have explained that I’ll eventually be willing to make older Mac
systems obsolete, but it seems a shame to do that over a triviality
like wget.
