Good point.

Some general questions:
- is the syntax for these map files really unified, so a single parser
  can handle them all?
- if not, should it be?

I can imagine a setup where you have something like
        texmf/fontmap/ttf
        texmf/fontmap/type1
that keeps the subtypes apart for those who want them kept apart.  On
the other hand, which types do we have to distinguish: type1, ttf,
type42 -- is opentype yet another type for this purpose?

I'm not sure I know enough about the way the map files are ultimately
used to tell.
