Response from Berthold Horn, Re: Configuring Y & Y for Windows XP

You know ... I think I have to say that, personally, I don't find the
position of `don't use ATM for Win2000/XP' and `install the fonts
without ATM' quite adequate. The first problem is that Win2000 and XP,
in the documentation, are being treated equally -- I don't believe
that's been the experience in this group.

Based on both the documentation and the experiences of Forum members,
our (= the volunteer support group) usual advice for XP itself has
been:

   a. turn ATM off (if it's on your machine)
   b. install the fonts via Control Panel (i.e., like any other font
        installation under XP)
   c. install Y&YTeX

And then ... vis-a-vis ATM after this point ... we have had
conflicting info from Forum members. Some have found they could use it
for installation. Others say it's absolutely necessary to have ATM
active once Y&YTeX's been installed, in order to get the fonts to
behave themselves. But was that under Win2000 -- or XP?

One situation which just comes to mind and for which I don't know that
we've thought of or posted explicit instructions:

   d. adding a font AFTER installation

I should think the advice would still be to:

   a. turn ATM off
   b. install the new font(s)
   c. turn ATM on

But is that the case? We've had reports of problems installing fonts
after the fact ... what have the specific facts/details been?

In any event -- and again, this is my personal feeling -- I believe
that we've seen such varied experiences reported here that we need to
consolidate that information into some kind of report or grid or
equation (with exact version numbers) regarding the combination of:

        XP + Y&YTeX + ATM + fonts

Without some kind of organised description, no real analysis can
follow -- and without analysis, we're going to continue having
difficulties providing newer users (or those of us who will,
eventually, upgrade ;-)) with solid instructions.

I have a proposal, in a separate message, for us to take some action
ourselves, and not wait for a new development component to be
established within Y&Y. That may take a while -- esp. if the company
ownership changes.

But we're still the users. We still need to keep going, learning to
deal with situations as they arise. And at present, we're probably the
best resource there is ;-)

Ch.
