BibTex

I can't make BibTex work.  I do the following:

In WinEdit, do Latex twice
Then, push the Bibtex button

The Bibtex window responds: I couldn't open the filename "name".aux

The aux file IS there, in the working folder.  Typing in the name as
instructed yields the
same "I couldn't --" response.

I've reinstalled to no effect.  My colleague is having the same problem.
I'm facing a deadline and hope you can help me soon.
