font problems

First of all, the computer modern fonts are 100% free and can be found, say, at

 http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/fonts/cm

but it sounds very strange that they are not installed with your Y&Y tex --
the CM fonts are basically hard-wired into the TeX system by design.

Since I am not running Y&Y tex (just using the Mathtime fonts), I cannot give
specific suggestions. However, from your mentioning of Courier fonts showing
up after you upgraded, I think what happened is that some font map files got
overwritten. (I.e., if tex doesn't know the location of a certain font, it
gets replaced by some default font, in your case Courier).

I think we need a few concrete log files to determine what is going on ;-)

1) What does a basic tex file look like in your setup when you use/do not use
Mathtime fonts? (Do you use \usepackage[..stuff..]{mathtime} or something else?)

2) Mathtime on its own does not include a great deal of additional math
symbols like the ones you mentioned. Neither does the Mathtime Plus fonts, by
the way (they add bold and extra-bold math fonts, a new script/calligraphy
font with lower-case glyphs and some upright variants of greek letters). What
you really need -- as you've noticed -- is to get the CM fonts working (and
then use the amsfonts package or something similar).

The good news is that you don't have to make an additional purchase ;-) The
bad news is that you probably have to install the CM fonts by hand :-( Does
the manual say anything about installing additional fonts?
