I'd like to second that.  A nice feature of the 3rd edition is its
documentation of many useful packages, right in the main text.  The biggest
drawback (for many users) of LaTeX as used today is that it's not a unified
set of software, and one must use packages to accomplish many simple
extensions. Having the packages documented along with the core of LaTeX is
a marked improvement in the "user interface."
