latex2e *is* "latex" ...    since 1996 latex has been running
the new version of latex ...  and running latex209 in
compatbility mode...  You already *have* latex2e....

for you, the difference between latex2e and latex209 is the
first line of your file

\documentstyle{article}  = latex209
and
\documentclass{article}  = latex  (which *is* latex2e)
