[Xy-pic] space around arrow labels

Dear all,

in the diagram

\xymatrix{A\ar[d]|x \\ B}

the label x on the arrow seems to touch the line of the arrow on both sides
and I would like to avoid that. I tried to put an invisible frame around
the label to get a larger gap in the arrow, but my understanding of the
xy-syntax is insufficient to do this.

Does anybody have an easy way to fix that?
