have you ever used the XeTeX enabled microtype package, which is provided on the TLcontrib site?

(Or the more or less private and updated copy Herb Schulz mentioned recently in another mailing list?) The problem with microtype is that you would need to setup tables (config files) which tell microtype how far the Indic characters from those particular fonts can protrude into the left and right margins. Although microtype is set up for Latin scripts it can also provide some sort of letter and inter-word spacing with XeTeX – with pdfTeX and LuaTeX it allows also font expansion, i.e., expanding or compressing the glyphs in a word slightly to make them fit better onto the lines.
