Pdfinfo shows that LinLibertineOZI or Linux Libertine O Semibold Italic is used for the word "italics". This could also mean that XeTeX makes the wrong choice or your font service uses other thresholds than mine. With fontspec you can define which font variant will be used for which markup. Maybe this corrects your issue.

I use
\usepackage[libertine={Ligatures=TeX,
    Numbers=OldStyle}]%
        {libertineotf}
where I previously used Linux Libertine O.
