Howdy,
Sorry, I'm not an emacs user but you might also try asking on the Mac OS X TeX email list since there are folks there using emacs. You can get more information at <http://mactex-wiki.tug.org/wiki/index.php/TeX_on_Mac_OS_X_mailing_list>.
One thing you might examine is if there are things in /opt/local/* that is interfering with the usual path search.
