Which defaults exist in PDF that can be controlled?
Which defaults are you thinking of?
You can use (in TeX Live 2009) the file /usr/local/texlive/2009/texmf-
config/dvipdfmx/dvipdfmx.cfg (/usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf/dvipdfmx/
dvipdfmx.cfg in TeX Live 2008) to configure some "defaults."
Compression is increased by setting 'V 4' to 'V 5,' i.e., generating
PDF version 1.5 output. You can also add different external commands
to handle some graphics file types.
If it's not a typo, the output driver for the interim XDV output from
XeTeX is xdvipdfmx – coming from dvipdfm, which has been extended to
handle CJK fonts as dvipdfmx. Then this version learned to handle XDV.
By making XeTeX stop at producing its XDV output file (-no-pdf) you
can invoke xdvipdfmx with -vvvv to see (in 10,000 lines of output) how
xdvipdfmx converts this file to PDF.
