[XeTeX] newbie umlaut problems

Please note that

\usepackage[ngerman}{babel}

sets up German language chapter headings etc, and may also trigger some language specific input methods in older versions of tex and latex, but for xelatex the presence or absence of this line should not influence the capability to have an input-file with Umläute and directly produce a proper PDF.
