[XeTeX] newbie umlaut problems

Either save your file as utf8 or tell XeTeX that you are using
another encoding, e.g.:

\XeTeXinputencoding "latin1"

\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{xltxtra}
...

Btw: xltxtra will load fontspec + xunicode. You don't need to do it
yourself.
