Please do as I told you: Put the code in the *preamble*
after loading bigfoot. If you put it inside a group (like
\begin{sanskrit}) the redefinition can't have an effect -- and it
didn't have one: my code contains a \showthe\count@ which should
give a message on the terminal (type enter when it happens) and an
entry in the log-file like this:
