[XeTeX] Font protrusion --- new or old ?

Yes, the Gutengberg Bible does used font protrusion---and beautifully. I
gather that Zapf was inspired by it to create his hz typesetting program
(see http://cajun.cs.nott.ac.uk/compsci/epo/papers/volume6/issue3/zapf.pdf).
But I also gather he has been criticised by it.
