@Florian:<br>Yes, the Gutengberg Bible does used font protrusion---and beautifully. I gather that Zapf was inspired by it to create his hz typesetting program (see <a href="http://cajun.cs.nott.ac.uk/compsci/epo/papers/volume6/issue3/zapf.pdf">http://cajun.cs.nott.ac.uk/compsci/epo/papers/volume6/issue3/zapf.pdf</a>). But I also gather he has been criticised by it.<br>
