Hi Andrew(s), the last character was an ornament glyph included in Minion Pro and it works correctly. I will uninstall the font viewers that I tried as they are far from satisfactory. One of them had the same weird behaviour as the Character Map.
Mi-san, thank you for your suggestion. I've just tested Kozuka Gothic Pro-VI M and Kozuka Mincho Pro-VI R, they were under \Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Resource\CIDFont. Kozuka Gothic is a Medium typeface, too bold to go with Minion Pro Regular. Conversely, the Mincho version blended well, especially when using it for kana. I will use it on my document.

yes the file was UTF-8, and seemed to have one PUA character in it,
not sure what that character was supposed ot be.
