You're right; sorry, I wasn't paying close enough attention! However,  
it really did work for me (using \XeTeXpicfile), but that was because  
I ran it on a Mac, where \XeTeXpicfile works through QuickTime and  
accepts many more graphic formats, including PDF.

\includegraphics uses the appropriate command depending on the file  
type, so that's another reason to prefer it, besides being more  
compatible with other TeX engines.
