thanks for the help.  i think it's an issue with pgf as well, but it  
still persists with the latest cvs entry, so i'll probably have to  
wait until Till has time to look at it.  right now i'm just working  
around it using CM for figures, which isn't so bad since i do similar  
for the math fonts anyway.
