[XeTeX] XETEX \special commands changed for xdvipdfmx?

Question:
Have the \special commands documented in Jonathon Kew's original
"xetex notes" of August 2006 changed for the Linux version using
xdvipdfmx?

I have a document developed using xetex on Macintosh.

It uses these \special commands to change colors in the pdf output:

\special{x:rulecolor=<hex rgb value>}
\special{x:textcolor=<hex rgb value>}

where <hex rgb value> is a 6 digit hex color value.

(I am also using \XeTeXpdffile and \XeTeXpicfile to include pdf and
jpeg files.)

This all works fine on the Mac.

I also want to run this document on Linux and have installed TexLive
2007. On this platform, xetex uses the xdvipdfmx driver instead of
the one used on the Mac.

Now I am getting errors, for example:

[3sh: gs: command
not found

This error is not raised if the -no-pdf option is given to xetex,
suggesting this is a xdvipdfmx error.

Can anyone help with this obscure problem?
