Word's support of OpenType seems limited to linguistic features.
AFAIK, there's no especial typographic support --- a quick check
seems to confirm this through Word 2003/4:

To be fair though, InDesign has the same problem w/ ligatures which
are directly inserted via the glyph palette for certain ligatures (I
posted an example using Bickham Script to the InDesign list a while
back).
