Quite recently I used XeTeX to typeset a document originally written
for standard LaTeX and only using CM fonts, because XeTeX was the
only engine allowing (on Mac OS X) the inclusion of PICT and TIFF
files without prior conversion of these files to other formats.

But then, of course, why would one use fontspec in these cases? I
don't know. Perhaps it's safer not to make any assumption about the
user setup, and set the default package options such that the package
runs in a "standard" OS X TeX setup (with only the addition of XeTeX
differing from that setup). But then, of course, is there such a
standard?

My 0.02 € message of the day ;-)
