[XeTeX] Nested \textit in an italic fontinstance

Neither.

You're using _really_ old, deprecated font calls though.

And it's as it was programmed back in the days of LaTeX 2.09 and before.

Use \emph{foo} instead for the desired behaviour and read the PSNFSS  
docs as a penance.
