[XeTeX] accessing fonts from TeX tree and glyphs without Unicode slot

This would be pretty handy, say the option of pre-defining in a .cfg  
file a list of places to look for fonts (e.g., /Users/Shared/Fonts/ 
OpenType/).

Alternately, perhaps a Linotype Font Explorer auto-activation plug-in  
could be developed for XeTeX?

Or, can FontBook be AppleScripted? If so, use TeX shell--escape  
mechanism to execute an AppleScript requesting a font activation....
