Thanks to both of you. This is really helpful.
BTW: Wouldn't it be better to use a separate language.dat for
XeTeX? And are there any other problems to be expected when
I use Babel? Isn't there a lot of other localized stuff (numbering,
dates, section names) that is not Unicode?
