I don't know if this is related at all, but I was rooting around in the /Applications/Utilities/Console output after I had typeset your sample and found this:

Aug 16 11:07:03 SGMOSX xdv2pdf: WARNING: Type1 font data returned by OFAStreamPSDownload isn't in the correct format required by the Adobe Type 1 Font Format specification.

Again, it typeset perfectly, but there seems to be something amiss nonetheless.
