[XeTeX] XeTeX+Tiger+OpenType bug

I think I need a little help. When Will posted the (presumably plain) TeX sample:

%!TEX TS-program = xetex
%!TEX encoding = UTF-8 Unicode

\font\1="Minion Pro"\1 Regular
\font\1="Minion Pro/I"\1 Italic?
\bye

(the %! stuff was not in his original) I tried it, and, I think, found no problem. I'm not sure in the discussion that has followed, therefore, just what the problem is. Could someone please fill in those gaps for me?
