If I have this in a TeX file:
%&xetex
\special{color cmyk .2 1 .5 .1}%
\nopagenumbers
$$\vbox\bgroup\tabskip1em%
\let\par=\cr%
\obeylines%
\halign{% Note no \cr
#\hfil&\hfil#\hfil&\hfil#&&\hfil**#**
Left¢er&right
Left¢er text&right
Left¢er text&right&and one more&and yet another
}\egroup$$
\bye
%%%%%%%%%%%
I get this in the console:
This is pdfTeXk, Version 3.141592-1.11b (Web2C 7.5.2)
\write18 enabled.
%&-line parsing enabled.
(/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/web2c/cp8bit.tcx)

I think this was working before, and it continues to work if I use %&latex for example.
Thanks.
