[XeTeX] xelatex problem after new 2003 setup of GWTeX

Thanks Herb. It confirms exactly the diagnosis made later today by 
Jonathan: your older, working texmf.cnf has the lines

	extra_mem_top = 0     % extra high memory for chars, tokens, etc.
	extra_mem_bot = 0     % extra low memory for boxes, glue, breakpoints, 
etc.

while the current, non-working texmf.cnf has the lines

	extra_mem_top = 2000000     % extra high memory for chars, tokens, etc.
	extra_mem_bot = 2000000     % extra low memory for boxes, glue, 
breakpoints, etc.

and the fix suggested by Jonathan is:

	extra_mem_bot.xetex = 0
	extra_mem_bot.xelatex = 0

Thus it all seems consistent.
