Traditional *nix wisdom is 1. Master one editor well. 2. Use the editor
you mastered for many purposes from editing programs in any language to
making documents, writing mails and system administration.

vi and/or emacs usually fit the bill. They are compact, fast etc. beside
being highly customizable.

Now some people give them up pre-maturely calling/perceiving them as
`not user-friendly'.

I can write a long essay on `what is user-friendly' and why vi/emacs are
very much so. But it will suffice to say that user-friendliness and
learning curve should not be confused.

In short my vote will be for a generic, yet extremely powerful editor,
whichever it may be, because the effort one puts in mastering it pays off
in every single activity you do as mentioned above.
