Acrobat Pro (9.3.2) does not read aloud the alternate text when using the suggested code. BTW, when I use cooltooltips package the tooltips are read aloud. I also tried the alttext command with cooltooltips but nothing happened.
Regards,
Ambika

Unless it is tagged, I think, Acrobat will not recognize. Unfortunately, you can't generate a tagged pdf with pdfTeX as of now. But, I still believe, the \alttext macro inserts right kind of PDF literals needed for marking alternate text as per Adobe's current PDF specification.
BTW, does Acrobat Pro read aloud the alternate text?
