There is no problem of using plain TeX equation code in LaTeX. The display
equations which appear between double dollars will not pose any problems
at all.  However, you need to include the definition of \equalign in your
document so that it will be processed without unwanted errors.

By the way, why you've chosen your name and location to be the subject of
the thread? This is something that comes from bad taste.
