[Tugindia] trouble with latex installation?

Hi,
	I have a basic latex file test.tex

\documentclass[12pt]{article}
\begin{document}
ljkkjglkjdf
\end{document}

on compiling 

latex test.tex

I get the following message

/home/pkg/pub/latex/sun/bin/latex: syntax error at line 1: `(' unexpected

Why is this? Is my latex installation faulty?
