(La)TeX being a *typesetting* program has to use several *lengths* (or
space) parameters, such as what the length and width of text (in a page)
should be, how much length to be left as margins all around, what should
be be the vertical length between paragraphs and so on. Several of these
have predefined values in the standard "document clsses". But the user has
the freedom to change these values through the "\setlength" command. Thus
for example,
\setlength{\parskip}{10pt}
will leave a vertical space of 10 points between paragraphs in the typeset
document. Please see Appendix A.1.4 of the LaTeX companion for an
overview of such matters.
