[Tugindia] TEXINPUTS and pdflatex

Hello,

I have the following TEXINPUTS.

TEXINPUTS=.:./figures/eps/:./figures/pdf/:./figures/:

When I place an eps figure in ./figure or
./figure/eps, and compile latex, latex is compiling
without any problems. But if I do the same thing with
a pdf figure and try to compile foo.tex with pdflatex,
the compilation is interrupted saying that figure has
not been found. Why is this  happening? Is it possible
that pdflatex can not look at the TEXINPUTS paths?
