Just tried that, to no effect unfortunately: there's only animate (3 MB) and texlive-docindex to update, none requiring updmap.

So I switched back to full TexLive-2014 and reinstalled the stix package. Hurray:

2014-10-17 17:50:34 +0000 Warning tlu_ipctask[3175]	running updmap-sys ...
2014-10-17 17:51:01 +0000 Warning tlu_ipctask[3175]	done running updmap-sys.

then the long-awaited "Install succeeded" watermark.
