I wouldn't be surprised about clang 1.1, but I believe it would still
be interesting to see the problems with gcc 4.4 (on OS X we are still
compiling with gcc 4.2).

Actually Karl just added some (slightly suboptimal) workarounds for
problems with ICU, so maybe the code would even compile by now.
