Hi Scott,

Maybe it's a bit late and you've already finished compiling, but I now remember
that there are binaries for various releases of FreeBSD available here:

http://anthesphoria.net/FreeBSD/TeXLive-2009/bin/

(We didn't include all the versions for obvious space reasons).

Anyway, I think the solution once you've got adequate binaries (either grabbed
from the above URL or found in inst/bin/somearchname after you finished
compiling) is to use the -custom-bin option of install-tl.

Alternatively, if you already have a TL installation, but only the binaries are
not working, you can create a new directory in the bin directory of this
installation, put your binaries here, and add it to your path. (You could also
overwrite existing binaries but then there would be chance that there get
overwritten by tlmgr during an upgrade, so using another dir is probably safer.)
