Building *is* easy as you experienced, just do ./Build.

The problem is *afterwards* combining the binaries and the texmf trees
that all works well.

For that you need knowledge which is not acquired in short time, you need
to know a bit about kpathsea and how it finds files, and how formats
etc etc are generated.
