Are these directories contained in texlive-20080822-texmf.tar.lzma?  If 
not, what is in this archive?  And how about 
texlive-20080822-extra.tar.lzma and texlive-20080822-bin.tar.lzma?

Yes, I did install it several times but I worked with it very little.

Can you suggest a way to 'unpack' texlive2008-20080822.iso as a regular 
user?
