For the record...

After the build, I have installed TL2009. I have used the same method I 
use for TL2008, i.e. move the inst/bin to /usr/local/texlive/2008, then

/tmp/texlive/2008/install-tl -location /tmp/texlive/2008
<i>

in which /tmp/texlive/2008 is rsynced with

rsync.tex.ac.uk::CTAN/systems/texlive/tlnet/2008

But now, with TL2009, in the install-tl.log I find the following failure:

Are the above errors to be expected in this stage of TL2009?
