[texworks] Unicode characters above USV+00FF not displaying

I would /suspect/ that Word-to-LaTeX is assuming an ancient 8-bit
environment. Even though you are a complete newcomer to [Xe](La)TeX,
you may find it far better to simply ask Word to save the document as a
UTF-8 text file, then use TeXworks to add the necessary markup. XeLaTeX
will assume by default that your input is UTF-8, and so long as you make
an initial pass through the resulting UTF-8 file replacing all of the
reserved characters with their escaped equivalents, you should at least
be able to see all of the characters correctly in the TeXworks
PDF previewer. Coding the tables will be the hardest part, and you may
want to see what code Word-to-LaTeX generates for these so that you can
replicate it; alternatively (since you are clearly not intimidated by
the idea of using [Xe](La)TeX even though you have never done so
before), you could create all the necessary markup /ex nihilo/.
