[texworks] Cached version of .sty being used?

I opened the .sty in another editor from time to time to check it was
changing, form the folder that MiKTeX looks for it in.
There is no other copy on the same machine, it is backed up to another
machine that MikTeX is not made aware of.

A number of times I deleted all auxilary files, deleted the generated
.pdf to force
visible regenreation, all to no effect.
I kept thinking that a cached copy was being used. but cached by what
and where I do not know.
