So it is indeed a font issue: the digits disappear while the - signs remain.

These are from two different fonts:

- The - sign is in the Mathematica1 font which is embedded in graph.pdf.

- The digits are in the Times Roman font which is not embedded.

Here's exactly what Acrobat says regarding the Properties of graph.pdf. There are strange indications on Times Roman being Type 1 (ie PostScript) and "really" (?) TrueType.

And here's what TeXworks says (in Window > Show > Fonts):

What you are seeing may be connected with the location of the temp TTF font file created by Poppler (here /tmp/YXgzx67m.ttf) being lost between one compilation and the next.

Maybe this is also a conflict between Times Roman (as used on the Mac and by Adobe) vs. Times New Roman (as provided by Windows).

In my experience the remedy to such problems is: always embed fonts, including the LaserWriter 35 (Times, Helvetica, Courier, etc.). With TeX this is obtained by making sure updmap has the following options set to true:

dvipsDownloadBase35
pdftexDownloadBase14
dvipdfmDownloadBase14

However, I don't know how to instruct Mathematica to include the LaserWriter 35 fonts in its PDF output.
