I have not yet updated to 10.6 myself, so I'm guessing here.... I've  
seen various reports of font-related problems on 10.6.x, so I wonder  
if it might be hanging when it tries to build the font menu (for the  
Editor panel in Preferences).

One thing you can do is to "sample" the process when it is in this  
hung state (open Activity Monitor, select the TeXworks process, and  
click the Sample Process button). This may show us where it's stuck.
