Sorry if my messages left the impression this is what I meant: I didn't.

Further inside the NSRulerView doc,

seems to say a point here is a PostScript point (1/72 inch).

So I have no idea why 30 pt within this context seems to amount to 4 characters for Menlo 12 pt.
