Stephen,

One of the frustrating aspects of programming is that users run into a slight problem and immediately retreat to an earlier version of the software, even though between those two versions SEVERAL problems were fixed. By retreating to version 4.15, you are back to the situation where text entry is inefficient due to constant calls to the Tags Menu code.

The code I want you to turn off is not "Check Spelling While I Type", or any other menu command, but instead the three items under "Spell Checking" in the first tab of TeXShop Preferences.

As a matter of fact, these three items would be automatically off for new users of TeXShop 4.18. But I suspect that you got the beta version of 4.18, and for beta users these three items were on by default. And once they are set by a user, TeXShop won't change them. (This paragraph is slightly inaccurate. Let me be accurate. The three items are off in the release version because Herbert Schulz warned me that I'd be sorry if they were on by default.)

I want you to return to 4.18 and confirm this. Turn the three preference panel items OFF. Then reload your document. Please let me know if this fixes your problem. Then I will know for sure what portion of the code to examine carefully. With the current iffy evidence, I'm not motivated to do so.
