Yes.  If you write "xelatex", I assume that you /mean/ XeLaTeX  — since 
you are a member of the LaTeX project team, why should I assume otherwise ?

Since the code as posted works here, but does not work in at least two 
other locations, I am inclined to believe that the problem lies not any 
one "side" but rather in the use of e-mail to convey code — this very 
point was made recently by Luigi Scargo :
